The Peter A. Allard School of Law is home to four centres, which specialize
in Asian legal studies, feminist legal studies, business law and environmental
law. Each of our centres brings together scholars and members of the
legal profession to collaborate and share knowledge, ideas and practice.
Below, we share an update on recent activities at the Centre for Asian Legal
Studies and the Centre for Feminist Legal Studies.
CENTRE FOR ASIAN LEGAL STUDIES
By Professor Shigenori Matsui*
The Centre for Asian Legal Studies (“CALS”) at the Peter A. Allard School of
Law is a research and education hub for legal scholars and lawyers who
have an interest in Asian law. CALS advances scholarly analyses of some of
the world’s most important legal systems and promotes public understanding
as Canada’s economic and cultural ties with Asia-Pacific countries continue
to deepen.
Over the past year, CALS has hosted a number of virtual seminars and
talks on topics such as the tax system and criminal sentencing in China and
same-sex marriage in Japan. We have also offered three regular courses providing
an introduction to Asian law, Japanese law and Chinese law. Recent
publications from our affiliated faculty members include a book on freedom
of expression in Japan, a book on medically assisted dying in Japan, an article
on COVID-19 and the government response in Japan, an article on Hong
Kong national secret law, a book chapter on Hong Kong constitutional order
and an article on tax law reform in China. Forthcoming publications from
