THE ADVOCATE 61
VOL. 80 PART 1 JANUARY 2022
Judge: Well, counsel, you led with your chin on that one.
Chaser: Mr. Dylan, you don’t trust me, do you?
Dylan: Do you take me for such a fool?17
Chaser: What have I done to you?
Dylan: So full of guile.18
Chaser: You seem to hate me?
Dylan: Don’t hate nothing at all except hatred.19
Chaser: I’ve worked hard to be in this position.
Dylan: As great as you are, man, you’ll never be greater than yourself.
20
Chaser: What were you doing to prepare for this trial?
Dylan: Thinkin’ about the law.21
Chaser: So, you know what we do here in court?
Dylan: People talk of situations.22
Chaser: Yes, and we sort out what happened.
Dylan: To conclude and to finish disputes.23
Chaser: You seem conversant in the process. You wisely retained a
good lawyer to sort this out?
Dylan: He’s well-schooled and he’s skilled.24
Chaser: I assume you still have confidence in the court, if not some
of its officers?
Dylan: The courts are on the level.25
Chaser: Well, our goddess Themis is blindfolded.
Dylan: And there’s nothing she doesn’t see.26
Chaser: You seem certain of that?
Dylan: Took a stranger to teach me, to look into justice’s beautiful
face.27
Chaser: And what did you see?
Dylan: Virtue lives.28
Chaser: You speak like a lawyer from an earlier time?
Dylan: Without a wig.29
Chaser: Yes. The law does evolve.
Dylan: Like me.30
Chaser: But you never struck me as a law and order kinda guy?
Dylan: Never took much trouble with the process of the law.31
Chaser: That could cause you some problems
Dylan: To live outside the law, you must be honest.32
Chaser: But you’re OK with the court deciding this issue?
Dylan: I’m gonna let the law take its course.33
Chaser: So, your ire with the law is focused on the legislative and
executive branches of government?
Dylan: The masters make the rules for the wise men and the
fools.34
