THE ADVOCATE 63
VOL. 80 PART 1 JANUARY 2022
Chaser: Didn’t it concern you that your fans thought it was a bad
idea?
Dylan: If I’d lived my life by what others were thinkin’, the heart
inside me would’ve died.53
Chaser: Well, some fans never left you?
Dylan: I’ve got nothin’ but affection for all those who’ve sailed with
me.54
Chaser: But the folkies didn’t want you to change?
Dylan: I try my best to be just like I am but everybody wants you
to be just like them.55
Chaser: So, you just moved on?
Dylan: Funny how the things you have the hardest time parting
with are the things you need the least.56
Chaser: Are you saying these folkies should stop living in the past?
Dylan: Don’t wanna judge nobody, don’t wanna be judged.57
Chaser: Well, why did you do it?
Dylan: There’s really nothin’ much to tell.58
Chaser: Mr. Dylan, I’m going to suggest to you that the reason you
“went electric” was to make more money?
Dylan: You know it’s not like that.59
Chaser: Well, you did make a fortune, didn’t you?
Dylan: Everything went from bad to worse, money never changed
a thing.60
Chaser: Can we agree you did benefit financially from going electric?
Dylan: There’s nothin’ I wish to be ownin’.61
Chaser: Seems like a pretty easy decision?
Dylan: I wish that for just one time you could stand inside my
shoes.62
Chaser: What are you doing with all this money?
Dylan: Just give a check to tax-deductible charity organizations.63
Chaser: So, your position is you should not be restricted in your
artistic creativity?
Dylan: All my powers of expression and thoughts.64
Chaser: You should be free to pursue your muse as you feel?
Dylan: Liberty, humility, simplicity.65
Chaser: Not sure I get that?
Dylan: You know what I mean—you know exactly what I mean.66
Chaser: You never seem content with where you are?
Dylan: Everybody movin’ if they ain’t already there.67
Chaser: Where to next?
Dylan: Sorry that’s nothin’ you would need to know.68
Chaser: You’re not going to tell us?
Dylan: We’ll just have to see how it goes.69
Chaser: Well, you acknowledge my clients feel injured and are hoping
for some compensation?
