counsel. There, he provided guidance to the lawyers in the firm and
resumed an advisory role with the Toigo companies. Retirement was not an
easy transition for him, as he loved being a lawyer and judge, and he always
sought news of the goings-on at 800 Smithe Street and in the law generally.
These updates typically took place at his favourite restaurant, Hy’s Encore,
where “Judge Hood’s Table” was always ready for him, as was his standard
order: a Mediterranean salad, which had disappeared from Hy’s actual
menu many years earlier. The servers there were like family to him. At
Hy’s, he entertained former colleagues, learned the latest news and stayed
current with the careers of his former juniors.
Sherman’s son is a lawyer at Whitelaw Twining, and Sherman was always
there for his son for debriefings after trials and, consistent with his prior
role with his juniors, Sherman was a stern but helpful and supportive mentor
to him. The one thing they could not see eye to eye on was NFL football,
as Sherman was a diehard Green Bay Packers fan and his son was just as
diehard but to another team: the San Francisco 49ers. Sherman was proud
not only of his son, but of all his children, with daughter Shannon having
had a high-level career in banking and younger daughter Suzanne having a
busy physiotherapy practice.
Sherman was a consummate father, and his family was everything to
him. He loved having family members together for Sunday night dinners
and barbecues in the beautiful backyard of the family home.
Sherman was surrounded by family (including his month-old greatgrandson)
during the latter stages of his hospice care, where he had a last
taste of aged Glenlivet and, true to his roots, told everyone he wanted to
return to the Soo.
He is survived by his wife Roberta; daughters Shannon (husband Corey)
and Suzanne; son Sherman (Miria); brother Alex (Adele); four grandchildren;
and one great-grandchild.
The Honourable Sherman Hood, Q.C.: a fine and dedicated judge, a great
mentor and colleague in law, and a devoted family man. He leaves many
friends from his clients, his former law firm, the profession and the bench.
