60 THE ADVOCATE
VOL. 80 PART 1 JANUARY 2022
Chaser: You don’t seem nervous or worried?
Dylan: My hands are sweating, and we haven’t even started yet.3
Chaser: Sarcastic, are we?
Dylan: You ain’t gonna worry po’ me.4
Chaser: Surely you were concerned when served with this suit.
What were your thoughts?
Dylan: I might need a good lawyer, could be your funeral, my
trial.5
Chaser: Why would you need a good lawyer?
Dylan: The enemy is at the gate.6
Chaser: Do you know why you’re here?
Dylan: Someone’s got it in for me.7
Chaser: Well, I wouldn’t say that. Do you know why my clients
retained me?
Dylan: Just t’ take somebody’s money away.8
Chaser: No, they’re upset.
Dylan: ’Cause I don’t be like they’d like me to.9
Chaser: You went electric and abandoned the folk tradition.
Dylan: Don’t you understand, it’s not my problem?10
Chaser: Well, let’s see if we can at least understand why.
Dylan: You know there is no answer fit to satisfy.11
Chaser: Well, the court would like to find one.
Judge: Mr. Chaser, the court will find an answer if you are able to
establish one.
Chaser: Yes, My Lord. Mr. Dylan, I get the sense you think I’m here
to get you.
Dylan: Don’t need a weatherman to know which way the wind
blows.12
Chaser: Do you know why I am prosecuting this case for my
clients?
Goodfellow: Objection, My Lord. Why is that relevant, and how would Mr.
Dylan know my friend’s motives for acting in this matter?
Dylan: Friend?13
Goodfellow: It’s a traditional reference to opposing counsel from earlier
times.
Dylan: Times are strange.14
Goodfellow: Yes, they are indeed. My Lord, as I indicated, I’m objecting
to the question.
Judge: It certainly is unusual, but this is an unusual case. I’m going
to allow the question.
Chaser: Mr. Dylan?
Dylan: What was it you wanted?15
Chaser: I’ll ask it again. Do you know why I am prosecuting this
case for my clients?
Dylan: Papa’s bankbook wasn’t big enough?16
