118 THE ADVOCATE
VOL. 80 PART 1 JANUARY 2022
Even in his illness, Paul continued to teach a masterclass in grace and
positivity. We are thankful for what he taught us and the sweet memories
of the “friendly” professor of law.

The Honourable Sherman W. Hood, Q.C.
The Honourable Sherman Hood, Q.C., a judge of the
Supreme Court of British Columbia from 1989 to
2007, passed away on May 21, 2021 at the age of 88.
Sherman Willet Hood was born on August 11, 1932
in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Sherman’s father was a
millworker, and his mother was a nurse. His father
had emigrated from Scotland before the Great War.
Sherman was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie (the “Soo”), and it
remained in his heart throughout his life.
He graduated from the Sault Collegiate Institute (the local high school),
where he was a star player on the Wildcats football team. He continued his
football career at Queen’s University, but in 1955 his friend Ken Arkell
(later a B.C. Supreme Court judge) persuaded him to transfer to Carleton
University for his final undergraduate year so that the two of them could
play for the Ottawa Rough Riders and, no doubt, get up to other mischief
together. That football season did not go well for the Rough Riders, so Arkell
moved on to the B.C. Lions and, a year later, he persuaded his friend Hood
to join him, both in playing professional football and in attending law
