THE ADVOCATE 275
VOL. 80 PART 2 MARCH 2022
In 2013, Kim became a partner at Lawson Lundell and remained as such
until accepting her current role as a master with the Supreme Court of
British Columbia in December 2020.
Among members of the insolvency community, Kim had a reputation for
being trusted counsel with an ability to provide practical advice. With
opposing counsel Kim was friendly and used her sense of humour to her
advantage. She was not cross unless she was crossed, which was something
most sought to avoid! Kim was always a strong advocate for her clients, and
her dedication to the law and practice was always apparent.
Kim contributed to the legal profession in other ways. She served on both
the provincial and national CBA Insolvency Section executive. She was
elected president of the national CBA Insolvency Section for the September
2019 to September 2020 term. She was a speaker at many CLE courses on
insolvency matters, and she authored papers on various topics. On average,
she authored or co-authored four papers each year for a total of approximately
50 papers over the course of the last decade in private practice. She
volunteered at pro bono legal clinics. She acted as an editor of both the
British Columbia Creditors’ Remedies Annotated Guide and the Law Society
checklists, and she was one of two founders of an organization known as
“YIP”, that being “Young Insolvency Professionals”. The goal of YIP was to
provide educational training and marketing opportunities for young insolvency
lawyers, trustees and bankers. Kim organized the annual YIP event
in Las Vegas for many years, before transitioning it to the new crop of
“young” insolvency professionals, to whom she acted as mentor.
While Kim is passionate about the law, she is also passionate about her
hobbies. She loves to travel and has shared some interesting stories, including
the time she tried skydiving; her encounters with sharks and other
deadly creatures while scuba diving in Australia; losing her weight belt during
a wreck dive resulting in her being shot like a rocket to the ocean surface
and nearly blowing her eardrums; and becoming ill while in India and
being prescribed medication that she later discovered was used for treating
Ebola and cancer (neither of which she had). On one more memorable
occasion, the boat Kim was in almost capsized due to a rogue ocean wave
during an expedition to view polar bears near the coast of Hudson Bay, and
she was mere feet from the killer animals. Oh, and Kim also survived a
major earthquake while on a hiking trip in Nepal. Her friends know to avoid
travelling with her unless they share the same risk tolerance.
Kim is also passionate about animals. She has two cats, a dog and a large
fish tank housing a small shark that was left behind by the previous owners
of the house she bought. Her dog, Taz, is a Labernese (a cross between a
