THE ADVOCATE 249
VOL. 79 PART 2 MARCH 2021
I do not know Joe’s personal life at all, what those closest to him gave up
so he could be “Joe”. But I am grateful and profoundly indebted to Joe’s family
and closest friends. We can do what we do only with the support of family
and friends, and although Joe was clearly apart from ordinary human
experience in many ways, he was no exception to this rule.
While many of us mourn the passing of a colleague and friend and the
loss of future cases never litigated, his closest friends and family mourn the
loss of the Joe they loved and knew better than anyone.
Thank you, Joe. Thank you, Joe’s family and friends. You have given us
a better world. While we can never repay what you sacrificed, thanks to
countless living monuments we will never forget what you have done.
