TRU LEGAL APP TEAM WINS FIRST PLACE IN INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION
TRU Law offers a course titled Designing Legal Expert Systems, which is
taught by Dr. Katie Sykes. The course has students create apps that can help
people get the information they need, when they need it, in a user-friendly
way. In past years, students in the course have presented their work to the faculty,
students and community of TRU Law through the “Battle of the Apps”.
One team has taken their app battle one step further. In winter 2022, they
worked with Dr. Sykes on an independent project, building off their work in
the Designing Legal Expert Systems course. They created the “Gladue Submissions
Assistant”, a tool for facilitating the use of Gladue factors in sentencing
and bail. The TRU Law students entered their app into the Iron
Tech Law Invitational.
TRU Law’s team finished in first place. They took this prize over teams
from the United States, Singapore and Australia. Congratulations to the
team members: Nick Todd (3L), Darnel Tailfeathers (3L), Zack Halper-Johnson
(3L), Sean Macdonald (2L) and Hasleen Sanghera (2L).
MOOT COMPETITIONS
TRU Law students competed in nine moot competitions. This year’s B.C.
Law Schools’ Moot and the Kawaskimhon Moot were held in person, while
