A statue of Sir Francis Drake is among those on the exterior of the B.C. Legislative
Library, whose website explains: “his significance for world exploration
is certain; however, his particular significance for British Columbia is
disputed. Depending on who is asked, Drake sailed along the coast of the
Pacific Northwest as far as Alaska before ice turned him back … Others,
however, will point to the fact that his maps suggest he only sailed as far
north as the current border between Oregon and California”.
On average, humans need seven hours of sleep a night, though many grumble
of getting less. However, compared to other primates, we do well. All our
evolutionary cousins require more sleep. Chimpanzees average 9.67 hours
of sleep a night and the ring-tailed lemur about 11.05 hours. Getting things
done as a three-striped night monkey would be difficult given the need for
17 hours of sleep each day.

Philip II was the king of Spain from 1556 to 1598, and for four years (1554–
1558) was married to Queen Mary I. Wikipedia notes that under his rule,
“Spain reached the height of its influence and power, sometimes called the
Spanish Golden Age, and ruled territories in every continent then known to
Europeans”. Philip II’s court, which he moved to the splendid city of Madrid,
included an artist named Sofonisba Anguissola, originally from Lombardy.
Her work attracted praise from such contemporaries as Michelangelo and
Giorgio Vasari.
