Louise stiffened.
“If you are watching this, I am gone and have joined my brother and sister and
our dear parents. You are the two remaining members of the Groves family.”
Mary dabbed a tear from her eye.
“Darren, you have always been so sweet and supportive of me. I treasured
every phone call and lunch. You are very much like my mother, your Granny
Groves.
“Louise, I wish I could say the same for you. You are not worthy of the Groves
name. Darren is ten times the Groves you will ever be. Your final act was to bully
me into leaving the Groves estate to you. I went along with it because I realized
you would rob me of any peace in my remaining days. So, I signed the will this
morning.
“But this afternoon, I signed another one, leaving everything, every damn
cent, to Darren, including the house. Fortunately, you had me certified as sane
and able to sign a will. And the new lawyer interviewed me on tape about my
intentions. I expect she will have no trouble getting the court to recognize it.”
Louise bounded to her feet. “She was obviously not in her right mind. You
pressured her,” she yelled at Darren, who sat unbothered across the table.
Only two people in the room were smiling. Sabina. And Gerald.
