At age 75, in 2021 retired Chicago lawyer Arthur Muir became the oldest
American to reach Everest’s summit.
Richard G. Rogers was appointed as acting chair of the Civil Resolution Tribunal
for a term ending August 15, 2022.
On March 15, 2022, the Law Society welcomed the appointment of Natasha
Tony and Michèle Ross as lay benchers. Ms. Tony is the founder and principal
of Elevate Inclusion Strategies. Ms. Ross is a designated paralegal at Virgin
Hickman.
The CBA recently awarded the Louis St. Laurent Award of Excellence to
barbara findlay, Q.C., in recognition of her contributions to the profession
over a 45-year career.
While Canada does not boast its own Mount Everest, there is an officially
named Everest Lake and Everest Creek north of Manitouwadge in Ontario.
There is also an Everest Island in the St. Lawrence River just upstream from
Brockville.
“From this modest situation contest of a claim against an estate what at first
appeared to be only a jurisprudential hillock has by motions, counter motions,
and procedural steps, been raised into a jurisprudential Mount Everest necessitating
a record of some 775 pages”: White v. Hilbish, 282 Ala. 498 (1968).
In Hampton v. North Carolina Pulp, 49 F.Supp. 625 (E.D.N.C. 1943), District
Judge Meekins embarked on an alarmingly lengthy “prologue” (about fish,
floods and much else) when determining a plaintiff’s claim seeking to
recover damages for the alleged wrongful diversion and destruction of fish
in certain navigable waters. Part of the judge’s wide-ranging discussion
included the following:
Noah built an ark so many cubits high, wide and long. It had one door in
the side, and one window in the top twenty-two inches square. What ventilation!
We are told it rained forty days and forty nights and all the mountains
were covered with water. We know that Mount Everest is 29,140 feet
high. Since it was covered by the flood, the water reached an altitude of
more than 29,140 feet. Divide the altitude by forty and we find that the
average rainfall was more than 700 feet per day. How’s that for dampness!
