As noted in brief in our last issue, seven new appointments were recently
announced for the Supreme Court. Justice Bruce Elwood was elevated
from his previous role as a master. Justice Michael G. Thomas was
appointed as a new justice. Justice K. Michael Stephens was appointed and
replaces Justice J. Watchuk (Vancouver), who elected to become a supernumerary
judge on May 1, 2021. Justice Baljinder Kaur Girn replaces Justice
D.M. Masuhara (Vancouver), who elected to become a supernumerary
judge effective May 23, 2021. Justice John Gibb-Carsley was appointed and
replaces Justice J. Harvey (New Westminster), who elected to become a
supernumerary judge effective August 22, 2021. Justice Jacqueline D.
Hughes, Q.C. was appointed to replace Justice E.J. Adair (Vancouver), who
elected to become a supernumerary judge effective September 21, 2021.
Justice Briana Hardwick was appointed and replaces Justice L. Marchand
(Kamloops), who was elevated to the Court of Appeal on March 23, 2021.
In March 2022, three new Provincial Court judges were appointed: Judges
Ellen (Heidi) Hughes, Michelle Peacock and Susan Sangha.
Master Baker resisted “confusing a pitcher’s mound with Mount Everest”
when describing why another case involving more serious allegations
should be distinguished: Groen v. Harris Autowrecking Ltd., 2005 BCSC 1159.
Kathleen M. Kendall, Q.C., was reappointed and Bailey A.J. Savage was
appointed to the board of Thompson Rivers University for terms ending
July 31, 2024.
The VBA held its 2022 Dodgeball Tournament on April 6, 2022 at Britannia
Secondary School. The participants, though bruised, had a wonderful time
and raised funds in support of the Justice Education Society. Coming out on
top was the Notorious BLG team comprising Kendall Andersen, Salvador
Pimentel, Alexander Gray, Alex Miyahara, Edmond Lo, Brenna Fahey,
Jasmine Shory, Angela Serrano, Justice Ramos and Jen Pepper. Best costume
honours went to the members of Whitelaw Twining, each of whom
channeled characters from the movie Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.
