450 THE ADVOCATE
VOL. 80 PART 3 MAY 2022
Derek brings a diverse and learned perspective to the bench. Speaking
about bench and strength, he may have had his son Bradley film him bench
pressing 330 pounds, as the family that plays together stays together. Derek
enjoys travel, sports and arts, but most of all if he can enjoy any of those
with his many friends and family.
Derek has always focused on doing good work and letting everything else
fall into place. He has made it look somewhat effortless and for that, people
can overlook how diligent and methodical he has been throughout the
years. He took the LSAT, while enjoying his practice as a physiotherapist
and without planning to go to law school. He decided to practise plaintiff
personal injury law while enjoying a full and rewarding defence practice.
He can Love It or List It, and be happy with either result.
Derek is a great addition to our court system, and the public will be well
served by him. He takes pride in his patience and his ability to listen carefully.
He will make fair and compassionate decisions that will assist the people
who come through his courtroom at difficult times in their lives.
He will be missed by his many friends in practice. He was a resource and
a colleague off whom to bounce ideas because he brought both common
sense and wisdom to every challenge. He took great enjoyment when he
was able to bring resolution to his clients during traumatic times, and he
will no doubt bring the same passion and positive attitude to the bench.
