Lana Walker comes to Thompson Rivers University after working as a criminal
defence lawyer for over a decade. Originally from Kamloops, she studied
criminology at Simon Fraser University, earning her bachelor of arts
degree in 2003. She went on to study law, obtaining her bachelor of laws
degree from Dalhousie University in 2006. She completed her articles at a
large criminal defence firm in Toronto and was called to the Ontario bar in
2008. She worked as a trial lawyer in Ontario for several years before relocating
to Iqaluit, Nunavut in 2015 to work as a staff criminal lawyer for
Nunavut Legal Aid. She currently holds a senior counsel position with
Nunavut Legal Aid, focusing on practice management, file administration,
and peer review and support within the criminal law practice.
Lana recently took a sabbatical from Nunavut Legal Aid to spend a year
with the University of Saskatchewan College of Law, where she was director
of the Nunavut Law Program (“NLP”). Lana guided the program through its
last year of delivery, taught several upper-year law courses and designed a
clinical law externship course that allowed the NLP students to gain practical
legal experience before graduation.
Lana is an active volunteer in the legal community. She is a member of
the Kamloops Bar Association, sits on the Law Society of Nunavut’s Discipline
Committee and was the 2020/21 president of the Nunavut Branch of
the Canadian Bar Association (“CBA”). From 2018 to 2021, Lana was the cochair
of the CBA-Nunavut’s Criminal Law Section. Throughout her time
with the CBA, Lana enjoyed putting together professional development and
networking events for law students and the local bar. Lana has recently relocated
to Kamloops after over two decades away. She is delighted to once
