The Panguana nature reserve in Peru covers an area of 4,000 acres. Among
its rich ecological treasures are 56 species of bats. By comparison, the entire
continent of Europe is home to only 27 bat species. Among the Panguana
bats are three species of vampires. They produce an anticoagulant called
Draculin to keep blood flowing from victims they have bitten. The reserve
was founded in 1968 by German zoologists Maria and Hans-Wilhelm
Koepcke. While on a flight from Lima on Christmas Eve 1971, Maria
Koepcke and all but one of the other 91 passengers were killed when their
plane was struck by lightening and disintegrated. The survivor, Juliane, the
17-year-old daughter of the Koepckes, fell 10,000 feet (strapped to her seat)
into the Peruvian rainforest. She trekked for 11 days until she was found.
She went on to become a world-renowned zoologist in her own right and is
