THE ADVOCATE 765
VOL. 79 PART 5 SEPTEMBER 2021
Dear Editor,
Re: Spare Cash
I’m told that the Law Society
might stop supporting the Advocate,
and while I hope that doesn’t
happen, I’m already making plans
as to how to spend the $27 I’d save
each year. I thought about afternoon
tea at the Empress, but that’s
$89 ($129 if I want them to throw in
a glass of Veuve Clicquot Rosé).
Jones Bar-B-Que (a terrific place,
try it if you’re in town) does a tenpiece
bucket of chicken for $35,
which is at least in the ballpark, but
I try to stay away from fried foods
these days. Speaking of ballparks,
though, if the Victoria HarbourCats
are able to play again next year
(you know, post-COVID), $25
would get me a fully padded
“Campbell Club Real Estate Seat”,
so maybe I’ll get out of the office
and give that a try. I can explain to
my manager that it’s time saved
that I’d otherwise have spent reading
about the law in the Advocate.
Sincerely (sort of),
Michael P. Doherty
Victoria
Just as we were going to press a form
letter from the Law Society was circulated
to people who have already
written in to their benchers expressing
their concerns about funding for
the Advocate. We are reproducing it
below (although we do not endorse its
accuracy and stand by our reporting
on this matter). We are still getting
reports that certain benchers plan to
“vote against the Advocate” although
when this vote will be taking place or
why they’ve made up their minds on
this already is not clear. The following
letter indicates that some see the
Advocate as a “condition” of practising
rather than a “benefit” of being a
member. Please let your benchers
know your views on the situation. It
