Barry Dong
Barry You Fay Dong was born in Hong Kong in 1954.
His family came to Canada in 1956 and moved to
Port Alice, B.C. He was called to the bar in 1980 and
practised law at Owen Bird, Gowlings, and Harris &
Company. He died on May 8, 2021 after a valiant
fight with cancer. He is survived by his wife Barb and
his sons Jeremy and Taylor and their partners Jessica
and Rachel.
Barry was an extraordinary person and an exceptional lawyer. He was
also unique. His personality and character do not easily fit within a written
description. Everyone who knew him would agree.
Barry was raised in Port Alice—an experience that had a profound influence
on his life. Due to the shared experience of immigrating to Canada and
living in a small, remote town, his ties to his family were particularly
strong. Yet he was determined not to be defined by the struggles they
encountered. Despite challenges, Barry thrived and excelled. He worked
during the summers at the local mill and worked his way up to a position of
responsibility. More importantly, he was active in the community and built
lifelong friendships that were renewed each year when he returned to Port
Alice.
