TRU LAW
FACULTY NEWS
By Daleen Millard*
INTRODUCTIONS AND THANKS
Please allow me to introduce myself as TRU’s new dean of law! I arrived in
Canada from South Africa to begin work in Kamloops after a lot of uncertainty
and pandemic-related delay, but I am finally up and running. An
international move in the midst of a pandemic is bound to be complicated.
Quarantining in an Airbnb for two weeks with a disoriented Dachshund and
a frazzled family posed many challenges, including interesting meal
choices and severely limited wardrobe options! I was understandably
deeply touched by faculty and staff who reached out virtually and delivered
eats and treats to my doorstep to welcome me to Kamloops.

warm welcome over the last few months. While respecting pandemic protocols,
I was able to have virtual coffees with students and socially distanced
lunches with colleagues. The highlight was definitely ending each week
with virtual chats on Friday afternoons. All these acts of kindness enabled
me to transition into the faculty. The former dean, Brad Morse, played a
crucial role in providing advice and information. I would like to extend a
special thank you to my associate and assistant deans for their enthusiastic
support during my onboarding. Associate Dean Seán Patrick Donlan has
worked tirelessly to ensure that I become familiar with the governance
structures and administration of the faculty. Assistant Dean Alexis
Kazanowski left no stone unturned to connect me with people and to provide
timely updates from the profession—including through virtual
benchers meetings, the CLEBC boardroom and visits to our law school from
