STUDY PAPER ON THE CCEL INCLUSIVE INVESTING PROJECT
The Canadian Centre for Elder Law (“CCEL”) is pleased to announce the
release of its study paper on investment, disability and supported decision
making. The 300-page paper, Inclusive Investing: Respecting the Rights of Vulnerable
Investors through Supported Decision Making, outlines legislation and
regulation relevant to the practice of investment professionals. The paper
shares our consultation findings and concludes with strategies for enhancing
access to supported decision making, largely through regulation, professional
development and public education.
The goal of the project was to understand the experiences of people with
disabilities in making their own investment decisions, particularly in working
with supportive decision makers. As a result, the study paper is being
launched in tandem with a suite of educational resources that aim to help
all the key stakeholder groups to better understand and apply supported
decision making. In particular, the materials target people living with
dementia or intellectual disabilities, people who support them with decisions
(largely family members) and investment sector professionals. The
resources include:
1. booklet—“Helping Someone with Investment Decisions: A
Resource for Family and Friends”;
2. booklet—“Making Investment Decisions with Support: A Resource
for People Living with Dementia”;
3. presentation for the investment sector—“Inclusive Investing:
Respecting the Rights of Vulnerable Investors through Supported
Decision-Making”;
