THE ADVOCATE 445
VOL. 79 PART 3 MAY 2021
Simon is close with his sister Rebecca and brother Ted and their families.
They confirm he was infuriating to argue with (any other lawyers heard
that from their families?), though laughing at his shortcomings made up for
it. His terrible sense of direction, inherited from his mother, will make judicial
travelling an adventure. The occasional, entertaining struggles are
exemplified by his flailing about in the water trying to help navigate his
brother’s boat out of a bay near Tofino. “Just what you need in a tricky tide”,
muttered one of his wry friends, “an Oxford D.Phil.”
“I told the truth, I didn’t come to fool you.”
The news of Simon’s appointment to the bench was received by his colleagues
with mixed emotions. While a leader, valued colleague and friend
will no longer be with us at the office, the community is gaining someone
who will unquestionably be a natural and exceptional judge.
