624 THE ADVOCATE
VOL. 79 PART 4 JULY 2021
I can only say that I was happy to have known him, if only for a short
time. I read all his books and was sad to hear he passed on in April of last
year.
Lord Denning was incredibly kind in his manner. He seemed to love
speaking with law students, and the fact that he always had time to see me
says so much about his attitude. I will always remember his recollection
that in his first year as a barrister he had billed £1,000 sterling in fees, sometime
in the 1930s.
“There was no legal aid in those times,” he said.
It is well for all lawyers, law professors, judges of the Commonwealth and
elsewhere to bear in mind what Denning said that day: “You’ll know when
you are to do right, you’ll know.”
Let us all hope we can know. To Lord Denning, wherever you are, thank
you for being you.
