Highlights

Hooray, hooray!  The first of May!

May has started with the first bursting of blossoms in the lower mainland and on the island.  Other parts of the province are easing out of their winter slumber as snow covered peaks melt and rivers start to surge.  Birds return and animals start to come out of their hiding places for that greatest of seasons: spring!  Hopefully the May issue of the Advocate puts a fresh spring in your step.  In this issue:

  • Entre Nous explores the importance of collegiality in a world of artificial intelligence and modern technological distractions.  Swipe up for more.
  • Distinguished Professor, Gerry Ferguson started his career at the faculty of law at UVic the year it was founded: 1971.  This year he retires and this month he graces the cover of The Advocate.  His remarkable career is reviewed by Ivan Watson, Julie Sloan and Michelle Lawrence starting at page 333.
  • Adam Howden-Duke and Murray Clemens, K.C. both report on the significance of the Law Courts Inn finding a new home at Charest Reporting Services in Vancouver.
  • The benefits of remote hearings (there are some) is explored by Fayme Hodal  and Jenson Leung.  Get outside, you two!  Enjoy the sun!
  • Joel Nitikman, K.C. is sure he is right but he might be wrong as he provides us with thoughts on a tax professional’s duty to warn a client about weaknesses in a tax opinion.  This is the second of two articles on this subject … we think, but we might be wrong.
  • The mysterious, Virgil Braitwaite, ventured out into a post-Covid world to bring us an update on whatever became of the Guile Debate (hint: it’s now called the B’Guiled Debate).  Virgil braved some of the most colourful of arguments on whether anyone should be the judge in their own cause just so that he could prattle on about the experience.  We thank him for doing so, but he owes us lunch.
  • Michael Welsh, K.C. on his own behalf and not on behalf of the Law Society brings us a wine column about Riesling.
  • Assistant editor, Ludmila B. Herbst, K.C. writes about “Helen Kinnear: The British Empire’s First ‘Lady Silk’” in Legal Anecdotes and Miscellanea.
  • The letters to the editor this month are impressive in terms of volume and some grumbly train-spotty monarchists take over the Grumbles section of the magazine.
  • Allard, Uvic and TRU provide us with interesting updates on what is going on with their faculties (get it?) while VanIAC, LAP and the BC Law Institute all provide us insight into their goings on as well.
  • Bench and Bar is a little more philosophical than usual, but it is all Greek to us.
