THE ADVOCATE 129
VOL. 79 PART 1 JANUARY 2021
your available time and energy. Other lists include “Best Hikes for Autumn
Colours”, “Best Waterfalls” and—again, for those who desire more than the
mere basics—“Best Peakbagging Poems”. The authors have also recorded a
short history of the venerable Alpine Club of Canada and the BCMC, as well
as the lesser-known Bagger Challenge, established by Crerar senior as a fun
way to encourage and recognize fellow enthusiasts. A surprising number of
participants have managed to summit all 67 peaks in one season: they are
known as “compleatists”. Impressive!
The most notable and enjoyable aspect of the book is indicated by its
“Glorious” title: the authors are quite simply enthralled by Vancouver’s
backyard. Their enthusiasm for the topic is reflected in the writing: Capilano
Mountain is “a sinfully neglected adventure, with varied terrain including
two magnificent cirque lakes and a blinding playground of white
granite”. It makes you want to go there, and even if you do not make it to
that particular peak anytime soon, you get a fine sense of why these authors
have enjoyed so many fine days on the trails of the North Shore mountains.
May you too.
