THE ADVOCATE 113
VOL. 79 PART 1 JANUARY 2021
At the B.C. Ministry of Attorney General, Matthew advised on a wide variety
of complex commercial transactions, including negotiations between
the province and the LNG industry, the Kinder Morgan pipeline and the
implementation of the Tsawwassen First Nation Final Agreement. He also
continued with some select litigation, including arguing two cases on behalf
of the province at the Supreme Court of Canada.
In short, Matthew’s legal career in British Columbia has been as varied as
the cases he will see on the bench, encompassing both high-level solicitor
and barrister work, and a role as a trusted advisor to individuals, companies
and government.
Outside of the law, in addition to helping raise two daughters, Matthew
has given back to his community through many volunteer activities, both
charitable and political. He has served at different times as president of the
Vancouver Civic Non-Partisan Association and of the Vancouver Quadra
Riding Association of the Liberal Party of Canada. He has also served on the
boards of the Little Mountain Neighbourhood House, Stratford Hall and the
Vancouver Lawn Tennis & Badminton Club, where he was vice-president.
As is evident from the above (by no means exhaustive) summary,
Matthew will bring a keen intellect, a strong work ethic, empathy and a
diverse array of legal and community experience to the bench. Those who
know Matthew know that he will be an excellent judge and wish him a long
and rewarding judicial career.

ceremony in the presence of some friends, judges
and courthouse staff in the judges’ lounge at the Vancouver
Law Courts on May 8. As one of our first
pandemic-era judicial appointees, Sandra—or Sandy, as she is known to her
law school classmates—will add this fun fact to the long list of somewhat
