734 THE ADVOCATE
VOL. 78 PART 5 SEPTEMBER 2020
July 27, 2020
I have just returned from vacation and learned of the potential loss of dining
and meeting space at the Law Courts Inn. With so few large spaces available
for bar meetings and events, this is a decision with significant impact
and bears consultation with its users.
Since I joined the CBA BC Branch in 1997, and after that in my position as
the CEO of Courthouse Libraries, the Law Courts Inn has been the epicentre
of lawyers and judges meeting together to learn from one another and
make the work of the courts so much better. It has been an exceptional
space for bringing the bar and bench together. It has also been a place where
I have personally, along with many lawyers I’ve met in the Law Courts Inn,
gained insight into the workings of court and the standards to which every
member of the B.C. Bar should aspire.
I urge you to consult with those who use and rely on the Inn’s dining and
meeting spaces, to seek an accommodation to ensure that this valuable
space is not lost to the profession.

Re: The Law Courts Inn (Vancouver Courthouse)
The Advocate is a publication of the Vancouver Bar Association and has
been published continuously since 1943. It is circulated six times per year
to all members of the bar in British Columbia as well as to members of the
judiciary and others throughout the Commonwealth.
The undersigned editorial team of the Advocate write to express our dismay
at the idea of the provincial government not renewing the lease of the
Lawyers Inn Society which has operated the Law Courts Inn at 800 Smithe
Street for 40 years on behalf of the public and the legal profession.
We are aware of the letter to you from the Law Courts Inn dated June 25,
2020 and we fully endorse the arguments advanced there promoting the
hundreds of events regularly held in the space for members of the profession
and members of the public. In our experience, the Law Courts Inn is a
