of BCLI and the CCEL. They are:
• Miriam Kresivo, Q.C.: Miriam is known throughout the legal profession
in B.C. for her contributions to the Law Society of British Columbia,
where she served as president in 2018. BCLI is looking forward to
Miriam’s insights and guidance as BCLI and the CCEL continue their
work in these changing times.
• Edward L. Wilson: Ed is a partner at Lawson Lundell LLP. Prior to his
appointment, Ed was a dedicated committee member on the recently
completed Strata Property Law Reform project. He is well known for
his contributions as chair of over ten CLEBC courses and numerous
• Marian K. Brown: Marian brings over 25 years of experience in criminal
law. She also brings her experience as a current member of the
CBA’s National Policy Committee and as the vice-chair of the board of
trustees for the National Museum of Science and Technology.
I am also pleased to welcome Professor Margot Young, appointed by the
dean of the Peter A. Allard School of Law in August 2020. Margot teaches in
the areas of constitutional and social justice law and sits on a number of editorial
boards for academic journals as well as on the boards of Justice for
Girls and the David Suzuki Foundation.
At the time of writing, we are awaiting two more appointments: one from
the dean of the Faculty of Law at Thompson Rivers University and one from
2020 has been a challenging year for us all. As the newly appointed chair,
I wish to thank the board and staff for all of their hard work and congratulate
the staff on their perseverance in continuing their work is these
extraordinary circumstances. The staff and their project committees have
continued to move projects forward. Since March 16, 2020 BCLI and the
CCEL have finalized and released a consultation paper on pension division
under Part 6 of the Family Law Act (March), tools to support decision making
for health care consent (April), the final report of the Builders Lien Act
project (July) and the consultation report for child protection (September).
CONSULTATION ON MODERNIZING THE CHILD, FAMILY AND COMMUNITY
SERVICE ACT CLOSING SOON
In September 2020, BCLI released its Consultation Paper on Modernizing the
Child, Family and Community Service Act (the “CFCSA”), a project funded by
the Law Foundation of British Columbia.
