reruns and Survivor, travelling and going for walks, hikes and bike rides. She
regularly travelled with all of her girls, with many special times spent
together travelling overseas in England (where her brother lives), France,
Italy and Oregon.
This did involve some juggling: to support her teammates and ensure
that she would be able to meet the many deadlines in various courts, Karen
often took work with her on family holidays. Her colleagues recall exchanging
factum drafts with Karen while she was in Paris, Hawaii and the South
of France. Karen derives great pleasure from beginning or ending her day
overlooking the ocean, sipping a cup of coffee or a glass of wine (as the time
of day permits) and reading over a legal argument.
Sometimes juggling also involved bringing family to the workplace.
Karen once brought her twin daughters, Emmy and Anya, to work with her
so she could attend an important meeting, which was promptly interrupted
by her paralegal and dear friend, Heather Lewis, and two police officers.
Having recently learned about calling 911 in an emergency, Emmy and
Anya had apparently been “practising” this skill using Karen’s office phone,
repeatedly calling 911 and then hanging up. As they grew older, Karen’s
daughters enjoyed regularly attending court, often with friends, to watch
from the gallery.
Karen tends to befriend the people she encounters and welcome them
into her life, including colleagues, counsel she has met throughout her
career and sometimes witnesses. Throughout the years, many of these
friends have also become close to and spent time with Karen’s partner,
Mark, and Maaike, Emmy and Anya.
Again, one might think that Karen’s life is as full as can be, but she also
managed to play competitive soccer for many years with her “old lady soccer
team” (Karen is not remotely old; further, she does not look a day over
45). She continues to run regularly (often while mulling over a thorny legal
issue), attends boot camp and yoga, and has completed a few half
marathons. She has an abiding passion for the outdoors. During a trip to
Utah to interview witnesses, Karen got her first taste of Moab’s desert
scenery. She has returned multiple times, on her own and with Mark and
the girls to take in its splendors.
No doubt her judicial colleagues have learned much of the above during
Karen’s time on the bench so far. Karen’s fierce intelligence, humour,
warmth and compassion will serve her well in carrying out her role as a
judge. While her former colleagues struggle daily with her absence from the
office, they continue to build on her example and mentorship for new generations
